Learn about Kenner’s now iconic design for the Star Wars action figure line, how important the design was for the success. Mattias Rendahl, author of A New Proof – Kenner Star Wars Packaging Design 1977-1979 and pre-production collector, will talk about the basics of the Star Wars packaging design process, show original sketches, artwork and proof cards from all the vintage lines, tell stories from ex Kenner employees that did the original design. Plus a special part about Revenge of the jedi proof cards, the gateway to 2D pre-production collecting. And of course answer questions about anything from rarity to current values.

Here are a couple of sample pages for my upcoming ESB packaging design book. First one is a spread with some Leia 45bk goodness. The Cromalin Strikes Back will be made in the same way as A New Proof, ESB headers and relevance to the packaging design related stuff from 1980-82 only. Everything from the process will be explained, great new interviews. All known orig photoart and Cromalins will be featured, and of course most of the known proofs and a bunch of QC’s and mock-ups etc.

It’s ironic that this book is called the Cromalin Strikes back since ESB in the line that definitely has the least known examples of Cromalins But in the Zuckuss spread you see one of them.

Realease date is to be announced before Celebration.

Collector Awards Sweden nominated author and collector Mattias Rendahl as “Collector of the year”. The gala took place in February in Stockholm, unfortunately he didn’t win, “but just to be nominated among more traditional and more respected collector areas was amazing”, Mattias says. “When I started to collect Star Wars toys back in the mid 90’s, I couldn’t in my wildest dreams think our beloved toys would be auctioned off at Sotheby’s in NYC and Hong Kong, that it would be cool to be a nerd, or even less that SW should be nominated together with “real” collectibles haha Man, time sure has changed…”

We’re looking for Photo-art, Cromalins, Proof cards, QC’s, mock-ups, artwork for the offers and backs, 3-packs, EP packaging etc. Anything that has to do with the packaging design process. As long as it is Kenner 3 3/4 ESB related and/or got an ESB header it is of interest. SW characters with ESB releases are also of interest and will be part of the book.
This is going to be massive, so any info is also of interest. Especially if you’ve got a character focus and have kept track of exactly what is out there etc.
All info and contributions are very much appreciated. Just like A New proof, this will be a book by the community for the community.
